Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the practical course, students are able to apply experimental methods and instrumentation in crystal and epitaxial growth. They can design, execute and optimize growth protocols based on characterization data. They are able to characterize the obtained structures, analyze their results and critically evaluate findings in the context of current scientific literature.

This practical course methodologically complements the lecture Crystal Growth and Epitaxy.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • design and develop a protocol for a specific crystal/epitaxial growth sequence (k2/k3);
  • grow a crystal/heterostructure with state-of-the-art methods (k3);
  • characterize the grown crystal/heterostructure and critically evaluate the results (k3-k5);
  • analyze and summarize the procedure and the obtained results in a laboratory report (k4/k5);
  • critically discuss the results in the context of scientific literature (k5).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of crystal growth and epitaxy:

  • experimental methods and instrumentation used in crystal and epitaxial growth;
  • state-of-the-art growth processes for fabricating crystals and heterostructures;
  • in-situ, ex-situ, and online characterization techniques to monitor and optimize crystal growth;
  • structural, magnetic, optical and electrical characterization methods for analyzing grown materials.
Criteria for evaluation A combined grade will be determined, based on the preparation and execution of the experiments, the written protocol and the debriefing meeting with the supervisor, during which the results will be discussed.
Methods The practical course will take place in a state-of-the-art laboratory for crystal growth.
