Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and established concepts of the theory of condensed matter, covering the areas listed below. They can describe current research topics in this field.

This lecture is methodologically complemented by the exercise Theory of Condensed Matter.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • explain and summarize key concepts/approximations used to describe the quantum mechanics of electrons and nuclei in condensed matter systems (k1/k2);
  • interpret and select adequate model systems for the description of distinct classes of crystalline materials (k2/k3);
  • apply the principles and derivations to advanced problems in condensed matter theory (k3/k4).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of condensed matter physics:

  • phases of condensed matter;
  • crystalline solids, Bravais lattices, reciprocal lattices;
  • Born-Oppenheimer approximation, lattice dynamics, dynamical matrix, phonons, thermodynamics of the lattice;
  • electrons in a periodic lattice (Bloch theorem);
  • basic description of the electronic structure of metals and semiconductors/ insulators (independent electron picture);
  • basic concepts of many-electron approaches, second quantization, key phenomena beyond the independent electron picture, electron-phonon coupling.
Criteria for evaluation written or oral exam
Details will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Methods The course primarily consists of lectures on fundamental and current topics on the theory of condensed matter physics.
