Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and established concepts of surface science, covering the areas listed below. They can describe current research topics and open questions in surface science.

This lecture is building on topics introduced in the lecture and exercise Oberflächenphysik I. It is methodologically complemented by the exercise Surface Science II.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • explain and summarize key models used to describe surfaces and their physical properties (k1/k2);
  • describe and compare the properties of different material systems, identifying their unique characteristics as well as the common underlying principles (k2);
  • engage with current research topics in the field and discuss recent developments (k5);
  • present and critically assess scientific publications, developing skills in synthesizing information and articulating insights (k5).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of surface science:

  • electronic properties of surfaces;
  • dynamic properties (phonons and adsorbate vibrations);
  • thermodynamics of surfaces and thin films;
  • adsorption and desorption;
  • diffusion and growth on surfaces.
Criteria for evaluation oral exam
Methods The course primarily consists of lectures on fundamental and advanced topics in experimental surface science, complemented by lecture notes and handouts.
Language English
Study material Lecture notes covering both parts of the course are available (presently only in German). In addition, all slides and supplementary information presented in the class will be distributed in electronic form. References for further reading will be given in the class.
