Kompetenzen
(*)Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental thermodynamic principles governing crystal growth. They can explain experimental techniques for the fabrication of bulk crystals, thin crystalline films and heterostructures (fundamental physical principles, technical realization, examples of application), covering the areas listed below. They can describe application cases of the different techniques, as well as cutting-edge research topics.

This lecture is methodologically complemented by the practical course Crystal Growth and Epitaxy.

(*)Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • explain and summarize key concepts of thermodynamics (k1/k2);
  • explain and summarize key concepts of crystal growth (k1/k2);
  • describe and compare the characteristics of various crystal and epitaxial growth techniques and their underlying principles (k2);
  • engage with current and cutting-edge relevant research topics and discuss the latest developments (k5).
(*)During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of crystal growth and epitaxy:

  • basics of thermodynamics;
  • phase transitions and phase diagrams;
  • optimization of crystal growth conditions;
  • various relevant crystal growth methods, covering conventional methods as well as advanced techniques;
  • cutting-edge research topics involving crystalline systems.
Beurteilungskriterien (*)Evaluation criteria will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Lehrmethoden (*)The class primarily consists of lectures on fundamental and current topics in thermodynamics and crystal growth.
