Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and established concepts of advanced solid state physics, covering the areas listed below. They can solve basic problems in selected areas of advanced solid state physics.

This exercise is building on topics introduced in the lecture and exercise Festkörperphysik. It is methodologically complemented by the lecture Advanced Solid State Physics.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to

  • apply their mathematical and physical knowledge for deriving key equations and quantities in advanced solid state systems (k3);
  • apply fundamental concepts of advanced solid state physics and handle the equations for solving problems and analyzing data (k3/k4);
  • describe and critically evaluate experimental methodologies used to investigate advanced solid state systems (k2/k5), with a focus on collecting and breaking down information from the scientific literature (k4).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of solid state physics:

  • inorganic semiconductors;
  • phase, order and symmetry;
  • critical phenomena;
  • phase transitions;
  • correlations;
  • molecular crystals;
  • quasicrystals;
  • liquid crystals;
  • magnetism and magnetic phases;
  • superconductors;
  • ferroics;
  • molecular magnets.
Criteria for evaluation Evaluation criteria will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
Methods Students are expected to solve exercise questions and problems as part of their self-study. The solutions are then presented and discussed in class.
