Learning Outcomes
Competences
The students understand the numerical solution of basic boundary value problems arising in continuum mechanics.
Skills Knowledge
  • understand and analyse basic models of continuum mechanics;
  • select appropriate discretization methods for the resulting systems of differential equations;
  • assess the stability, accuracy and computational costs of the discretization schemes;
  • implement the proposed methods on a computer and verify their behavior;
  • study efficient solvers for linear and nonlinear systems arising in continuum mechanics.
equations of linearized elasticity; weak formulations; Korn's inequality; Lax-Milgram lemma; Babuska-Aziz and Brezzi theorems; mixed finite element methods; iterative solvers.
