(*)This lecture course covers molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) which are known as artificial antibodies and enzymes. Students gain insights in the biological foundations and the biomimetic approaches for designing MIPs and their variabilities in terms of syntheses, formats, characteristics and applications.

• Understand the foundations and the principle of molecular imprinting. [k1, k2]
• Know and understand the synthetic approaches of producing molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). [k1, k2]
• Know and understand the formats of MIPs and their characteristics. [k1, k2, k4, k5]
• Know and understand the applicabilities of MIPs and their working mechanisms. [k1, k2, k3, k5]

(*)• Biological archetypes of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs): proteins, antibodies and enzymes.
• Principle and biomimetic approach of molecular imprinting.
• Basics of polymerisation, ways of synthesizing MIPs via bulk/emulsion/precipitation/suspension polymerization.
• Formats of MIPs: particles, coatings, membranes, gels, etc..
• Applications of MIPs in: chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, solid phase extraction, assays, sensor technology, catalysis, combinatorial libraries, and controlled release.
