Pre-requisites For safety reasons, at least 25 ECTS verifiably in chemical laboratory courses with individual experimental work or admission to the Master's program in "Chemistry and Chemical Technology", "Management in Chemical Technologies", "Polymer Chemistry" or "Biological Chemistry".
Original study plan Master's programme Chemistry and Chemical Technology (CCT) 2025W
Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students will be able to perform, understand and evaluate modern instrumental analytical analysis experiments.
Skills Knowledge
More specifically, upon completion of the course, they will be able to: • Determine molar mass and distribution of polymers (k2, k3, k4, k5) • Quantify analytes at trace level using chromatography hyphenated with mass spectrometry (k2, k3, k4, k5) • Apply high resolution mass spectrometry to biomolecules (k2, k3, k4, k5) • Determine a peptide sequence using NMR (k2, k3, k4, k5) • Report their results in a protocol in a scientific writing style (k4, k5) The course is divided into five consecutive sections with the following experiments: • Analysis of polyolefins by gel permeation chromatography • Lipidomics • High resolution mass spectrometry of peptides • Determination of artificial sweeteners and caffeine in energy drinks by HPLC-QqQ • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance - identification and assignment of unknown peptide
Criteria for evaluation Lab reports on practical work; Final exam; Short tests related to the experiments
Methods Practical work in the chemical laboratory; Evaluation of analytical measurements
