Competences
Students will acquire a broad understanding of industrial property rights — encompassing patents, utility models, design and trademark law, know-how, and copyright — and learn how these rights are practically applied and leveraged in a business context.
Skills Knowledge
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to • read, interpret, and analyse various forms of intellectual property rights. (k1, k2, k3, k4) • identify and evaluate intellectual property rights for strategic business advantage. (k2, k5) • conduct Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) analyses to assess risk. (k3, k4) • understand the basic procedures for enforcing intellectual property rights. (k2) • determine who holds entitlement to these rights and whether/how compensation should be granted. (k4)

Furthermore, practical workshops will enhance students’ ability to independently tackle real-world cases and help them avoid common strategic errors, illustrated through real, concrete examples. (k3)

This course is structured into several key sections: • Introduction and Historical Context • Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) • Design and Trademark Law • Patent and Utility Model Law • Effects of Patents and Utility Models, and the Enforcement of Rights • Evaluation and Exploitation of Intellectual Property Rights • Know-How • Rights to Work Products • Workshops: Practical Examples of an Invention and Project Kick-Off
