(*)Students will be able to understand chemistry and identify the structures of various classes of natural products and understand and explain the fundamental chemical pathways responsible for their biosynthesis as well as the roles of various cofactors for biochemical transformations.

(*)More specifically, upon completion of the course they will be able to - Identify important classes of natural products and cofactors that are biologically relevant (k2, k4) - understand and explain the underlying biological mechanisms responsible for the synthesis of various natural products (k2, k3, k4) - explain the roles of important biologically relevant co-factors (k3, k4) - understand the differences in reactivities of different classes of heterocycles (k2, k4, k5) - carry out correlations between biochemical synthesis pathways and laboratory processes (k4, k5) (*)Underlying concepts and details of - Carbohydrates - Amino acids, Peptides - Nucleic acids - Heterocycles and derived natural compounds - Alkaloids - Lipids, polyketides, fatty acids - Terpenes and steroids - Vitamins - Mechanisms in biological chemistry
