Learning Outcomes
Competences
This lecture is designed as a course about technical biopolymers, also called engineering biopolymers. It gives an insight in the definition of technical biopolymers, the history of their development and their future impact on sustainability of polymers and plastics. Students learn to classify technical biopolymers, how they are produced and what structures, properties and characteristics of such polymers are expectable. Furthermore, they will gain information about the market situation and legal aspects of technical biopolymers.
Skills Knowledge
After completion of the course, students will be able to • Know the definitions of technical biopolymers [k1]. • Know and understand how to synthesize technical biopolymers [k1, k2]. • Know and understand the structures and properties of technical biopolymers [k1, k2]. • Know and understand basic legal aspects of technical biopolymers [k1, k2]. • Know and understand the advantages of technical biopolymers in terms of sustainability [k1, k2]. • Know and understand the market and applications of technical biopolymers [k1, k2]. • Basics of technical biopolymers: definitions, history, classifications, price developments, degradabilities. • Resources: raw materials: renewable vs. petrochemical resources, agriculture & acreage demand. • Synthesis of technical biopolymers: chemical synthesis, modification of renewable resources, biosynthesis, blends. • Chemical structures & technical properties of biopolymers. • Legal aspects of technical biopolymers: standards, (bio)degradability, compostability, waste treatment. • Sustainability and technical biopolymers: end-of-life options, eco-balancing. • Biopolymer market & applications of technical biopolymers.
