Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to explain fundamental and advanced concepts from the listed areas of surface physics, including relevant theoretical and experimental methods. They will further gain initial insights into current research questions and trends.
This exercise is methodically complemented by the lecture Oberflächenphysik I.
Skills
Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students will possess the following skills. They are able to
apply their knowledge to derive key equations and quantities in surface science (k3);
solve practical numerical problems and assess the plausibility of the results obtained (k3/k4);
apply the acquired knowledge to analyze experimental data (k3/k4).
During the course, students will acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of surface science:
introduction to vacuum technology and surface analytics;
crystallography of surfaces and adsorbed layers, and their characterization with diffraction techniques and scanning probe microscopy;
electronic structure of surfaces.
Criteria for evaluation
The assessment is based on the number of successfully solved problems, the quality of the presentation, and active participation in the exercise session.
Methods
independent solving of exercise problems, and presentation and discussion of these solutions in class
