Learning Outcomes
Competences
After successfully completing the course, students are able to explain basic and advanced concepts of thermodynamics in the areas listed below. They can apply theoretical reasoning and problem-solving methods, and transfer these to simple physical systems.

This lecture is methodically complemented by the exercise Theoretische Thermodynamik.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students learn the following skills. They are able to

  • understand and explain basic concepts and calculation methods in thermodynamics (k1/k2);
  • formulate and interpret theoretical concepts of thermodynamics in a precise and analytical way (k3);
  • transfer the theoretical concepts of thermodynamics to other examples of simple physical systems (k3/k4).
During the course, students acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of thermodynamics:

  • simple thermodynamic systems;
  • relevant macroscopic variables and state variables, state and equilibrium, equations of state;
  • temperature, heat and work;
  • simple microscopic models from classical and quantum mechanics;
  • laws of thermodynamics;
  • cyclic processes, heat engines, heat capacities, Carnot cycle;
  • classical and statistical derivation of entropy;
  • reversible and irreversible processes;
  • fundamental relations;
  • thermodynamic potentials;
  • theoretical equilibrium conditions, thermodynamic stability, simple phase equilibria.
