Learning Outcomes
Competences
After successful completion of the course, students are able to explain the basic concepts of quantum mechanics in the areas listed below. They can transfer their knowledge to systematically solve more advanced physical problems in the area of quantum mechanics. Furthermore, they are able to apply problem-solving methods to concrete examples.

This exercise is methodically complemented by the lecture Theoretische Quantenmechanik I.

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students learn the following skills. They are able to

  • explain physical problems and concepts as well as mathematical solutions (k2);
  • work out solutions to mathematical problems in the field of quantum mechanics (k3);
  • transfer concepts and solution approaches to new and unknown problems and select and apply suitable mathematical methods (k3/k4);
  • present their solutions to the group and discuss different approaches (k3/k4).
During the course, students acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of quantum mechanics:

  • wave-particle dualism of light and matter;
  • statistical interpretation of the wave function;
  • eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of operators;
  • Heisenberg's uncertainty principle for observables;
  • Schrödinger equation;
  • continuity equation;
  • time evolution operator;
  • harmonic oscillator;
  • fundamentals of representation theory;
  • hydrogen atom;
  • electron spin;
  • perturbation theory.
Criteria for evaluation (1) Number/quality of successful completion of exercises and, eventually, (2) written tests
