Learning Outcomes
Competences
Upon successful completion of the course, students are able to describe fundamental concepts in the listed areas of mechanics and thermodynamics. They can transfer their knowledge to systematically solve more advanced physical problems. Furthermore, they are able to apply problem-solving methods to concrete examples.

This exercise is methodically complemented by the lecture Grundlagen der Physik I (Mechanik und Wärmelehre).

Skills Knowledge
Upon completing the course, students learn the following skills. They are able to

  • independently or collaboratively develop analytical or phenomenological solutions to physical problems in the field of classical mechanics and thermodynamics (k3);
  • apply concepts and problem-solving strategies to new and unfamiliar questions, selecting and using appropriate mathematical methods (k3/k4);
  • explain physical problems and concepts, as well as mathematical solutions (k2);
  • present their solutions to the group and discuss different approaches (k3/k4).
During the course, students acquire knowledge in the following areas and concepts of mechanics and thermodynamics:

  • physical quantities and units;
  • forces, kinematics and dynamics of mass points, Newton's laws, gravitation, conservation laws for energy, momentum and angular momentum;
  • inertial systems, Galilei transformation;
  • rigid and deformable bodies;
  • oscillations;
  • fluids and gases;
  • fundamentals of thermodynamics, laws of thermodynamics, kinetic theory of gases, entropy, cyclic processes.
