Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students will be able to understand, apply, and explain the basic structural bonding concepts, electronic principles, and the three-dimensional aspects of organic compounds, as well as the systematic nomenclature of these compounds, and their acid/base properties.
Skills Knowledge
More specifically, upon completion of the course they will be able to - understand and explain the specific bonding concepts of organic molecules, i.e. with respect to the hybridization of carbon (k2, k3, k4) - understand and explain how different structural motifs are electronically stabilized/destabilized and how different functional groups influence the electronic situation of molecules (k2, k3) - understand and explain the threedimensional structure (stereochemistry) of organic molecules (k2, k3) - carry out the systematic nomenclature of organic molecules (k3, k6) - understand and evaluate the acid/base properties of organic molecules (k2, k5) Underlying concepts and details of - molecules, bonding situation, polar and nonpolar molecules, intermolecular forces, Lewis structures, hybridization, resonance structures, aromaticity - introduction to orbitals, molecular orbital description of bonding, hybridization - the three-dimensional structure of organic molecules, structural isomerism, and stereochemistry (chirality, enantiomers, diastereomers) - the systematic nomenclature of organic molecules - organic acids and bases
Criteria for evaluation Positive Evaluation of the final written exam.
Methods A combination of powerpoint (as well as handouts for the students) and examples and details written on the blackboard
