Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students will be able to perform fundamental syntheses and characterizations of organic compounds.
Skills Knowledge
More specifically, upon completion of the course they will be able to - carry out fundamental synthesis procedures following reported literature procedures (k3, k6) - evaluate the basic safety relevant aspects of organic synthesis procedures (k5) - carry out standard lab procedures to purify and isolate organic molecules such as crystallizations, distillations, column chromatography (k3, k4) - characterize and analyze small organic molecules by spectroscopic means, i.e. NMR spectroscopy (k3, k4, k5) - document their laboratory work in protocol books (k4) The course is divided into five consecutive sections devoted to the following experimental manipulations and reaction types: - preparative separation of organic compounds based on their acid/base properties and characterization by physical properties (Melting point, boiling point, refractive index and simple IR, MS and NMR spectra) - nucleophilic aliphatic substitution reactions - reactions of carbonyl compounds - electrophilic addition, elimination, reduction and oxidation reactions - reactions of aromatic compounds
Criteria for evaluation
  • Tests on safety issues and preparedness for the practical work
  • Practical performance including safe practice
  • Documentation of the results obtained (protocols)
  • Final comprehensive discussion of individual results
Methods Guided practical laboratory work
