Learning Outcomes
Competences
 Students know the basic concepts and technical terms of general chemistry and can apply the concepts they have learned to smaller problems.
Skills Knowledge
• are able to reproduce definitions of basic concepts in general chemistry (k1,k2) • are able to describe the structure of matter (k1,k2) • are able to explain relationships between structure or position in the periodic table and properties of substances (k2) and derive properties of substances from their structure (k2,k3) • are able to determine oxidation numbers (k3) • are able to draw Lewis structure formulas (k3) • are able to interpret the influence of various factors on a reaction (k2) • Atomic structure: development of atomic models, quantum mechanical atomic model, orbitals, electron configuration, periodic table • Matter: classification and properties, aggregate states, gas laws, intermolecular interactions, phase diagrams • Chemical bonds: ionic bonding, covalent bonding, metal bonding, hybridization, molecular orbitals, fundamentals of coordination compounds, Lewis structural formulas • Reactions: chemical equations, nuclear reactions, redox reactions and oxidation numbers, chemical equilibrium, acid/base theories (Brønsted-Lowry incl. buffers, Lewis incl. HSAB principle), complex formation, solubility, coupled equilibria •Laws of thermodynamics
