Students should become familiar with the wide range of management control mechanisms and instruments employed by for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. They should be able to identify, use, design and critically evaluate the main management control system frameworks organizations use.

- LO3: Apply the acquired knowledge at both conceptual and operational levels to real-world case studies to identify management control problems and possible solutions.

- Independently analyze the various management control systems implemented in profit and non-for-profit organizations.

Learning Outcomes
- LO1:
- Recall the underlying concepts and components of management control systems.
- Recall the underlying concepts of corporate governance and ethics and their role in management control practices.
- LO2:
- Acquire adequate knowledge regarding the main frameworks for management control systems, particularly focusing on Merchant and Van der Stede (2017) and Malmi and Brown (2008).
- Acquire adequate knowledge regarding the main corporate governance models.
- Acquire adequate knowledge regarding the main ethical models.

Criteria for evaluation |
Students can reach a total of 120 points:
- 70 points can be achieved with the final or retry exam.
- 30 points can be reached by individually analysing the management control systems of a selected company and writing an essay. Individual work is mandatory.
- 20 points can be reached by working in small groups on a selected case study and discussing the results with the class. Group work is mandatory.
Assignment and final/ retry exam must be both passed positively (at least 30 points each)
Final grades will be given as follows:

Methods |
Teaching combines frontal lectures, supported by slides and literature, active participation of students and in-class discussions. Individual and group work are also provided.
