Learning Outcomes
Competences
Students gain a basic understanding of the flow cytometry workflow, from experimental design to data interpretation.
Skills Knowledge
  • Understanding the principles of flow cytometry, fluorophores, spectral overlap and compensation. (k2)
  • Plan flow cytometry experiments, including panel design and control selection. (k3, k6)
  • Perform surface and intracellular staining of cells. (k3)
  • Set up and operate a flow cytometer and troubleshoot common technical issues during data acquisition. (k3, k4)
  • Use flow cytometry analysis software (e.g., FlowJo, FCS Express) (k3)
  • Analyse, interpret and present data, including histograms, dot plots, and gating hierarchies. (k4, k5)
  • Principles of flow cytometry and fluorophores
  • Spectral overlap, compensation, spillover spreading
  • Instrument setup and optimization
  • Experiment setup and staining protocols
  • Data visualization techniques, including histograms, dot plots, and gating strategies
  • Applications of flow cytometry in clinical and biomedical research
Criteria for evaluation Attendance of at least 80% is required. Students must present the results and interpret the data at the end of the course. The positive evaluation is "successfully participated", the negative evaluation is "unsuccessfully participated".
Methods Hands-on laboratory course with accompanying seminar and workshop on data analysis.
