Objectives Overall the objectives of this seminar are experiencing, understanding and reflecting dynamics on leadership and develop theory-based competencies in self-development and leadership.

Upon successful completion of the course students will

  • LO1: be able to identify, summarize and assess different leadership challenges and reflect upon their dynamics.
  • LO2: possess advanced knowledge about different state-of-the-art leadership concepts, are able to critically evaluate them based on their practical relevance and applicability.
  • LO3: develop leadership skills against the background of their own leader identity.
Subject Leading organizations in an innovative direction is a challenging task. In this seminar, students will reflect on the classical and often implicit understanding of leadership, develop a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of leadership as a process and understand their own role as leaders in this regard. They will be provided with theoretical concepts; but most importantly they will be given room for experience, discussion, feedback and self-reflection for their personal development as (future) leaders.
Criteria for evaluation Assessment modules:

  • I1: Preparation task (20%)
  • I2: Attendance and active participation (50%)
  • I3: Post-module reflection (30%)

Assessment criteria:

  • I1: Collecting examples on leaders’ experiences and challenges about when and how they became leaders. Appropriate summary of core challenges.
  • I2: Active participation in exercises and discussions; quality of contributions
  • I3: ability to apply the theoretical concept by finding appropriate cross-domain examples, ability to interpret by brining it to an abstract level, ability to relate it to self-understanding and to enact by finding specific examples of action.

Reflection of learning outcomes in the assessment and teaching methods:

  • LO1: esp. reflected in the quality of the summary of collecting cases and examples (I1).
  • LO2: esp. reflected in the quality of discussions and their contributions in class (I2).
  • LO3: esp. reflected in the quality of their reflection report and their individually drawn implications on specific actions for their personal development (I3).
Methods Real-life case studies and exercises including group discussions facilitate experience-based learning and allow for combining insights from personal experiences with theoretical background on leadership skills in order to support the development of their own leader identity.
