The beginning of the end of humankind or a long-awaited force for good? The public discourse on AI frequently oscillates between extremes, can be disconnected from reality and, beyond that, places a variety of technologies under the umbrella term of AI. Research shows that many people do not quite understand what artificial intelligence actually is. As a consequence, they are excluded from policy-making processes or may have to rely on widespread misconceptions. Based on scientific literature on media effects and practical examples from public AI communication, participants of this course discuss and exercise how research and developments in AI can be explained to non-experts and disseminated to other disciplines.
