Objectives |
The students know architectural concepts of database systems and their application areas. They know fundamental concepts of the design process of database systems, and know how to implement them based on requirement specifications. They are capable to conduct the design process with concrete data models. They know query languages to interactively define, query and manipulate data from (web) applications. They are familiar with problems and techniques of access protection.

Reasons and motives for the application of database systems, architecture of database management systems; database design process: conceptual, logical, and physical design: conceptual data models: entity-relationship model and UML; logical data models: relational and object-oriented data model; physical data organization: index structures; database definition and database access with interactive query languages, database access from (web) applications, access protection in database systems.

The topics covered by the lecture are reinforced by working on practical examples. Regarding the topics SQL, JDBC, and WebML, practical examples are executed under guidance of a course instructor by using suitable online tools. On each subject exercises are handed out, which have to be completed by the students in self-study. These exercises are completed online by using the electronic tutoring system "eTutor". The eTutor systems provides support with finding and solving problems to the students while working on the exercises and automatically grades the solutions. Furthermore, these automatic gradings are controlled by assisting staff. The final grading is done by the course instructor.
The characteristic quality of this type of teaching is the practical exercising with the eTutor system.
