Original study plan |
Bachelor's programme Economics and Business 2024W |
Objectives |
Students understand multiple linear regression models, are aware of the strengths and weaknesses of these models, and can correctly interpret estimation coefficients from these models. They understand empirical economic papers and can assess the quality of such papers. They can perform simple empirical analyses and are familiar with causality theory.

Subject |
The focus of the course lies on econometric theory:
- Probability theory
- Linear Regression Model (OLS)
- Model specification
- Binary variables and linear probability models
- Sources and consequences of endogeneity
- Rubin causal model
- Basic regression analysis with time series data
- Basic regression analysis with panel data

Further information |
- Students should have basic knowledge in statistics and econometrics (see, for example, Appendix A-C and Chapters 1-2 in Wooldridge (2013)). The course (KS) “Daten und Forschungsdesign in der Ökonomie” equips students with this knowledge and is offered every winter term.
- The main target group are students enrolled in the Bachelor program Economics & Business. Students enrolled in other degree programs who are interested in empirical methods are most welcome.
- The focus of the course is on econometric theory; the focus of the accompanying intensifying course (IK) is on the application of the material learned in the course. Attending the intensifying course in the same semester as the course is highly recommended.
