Objectives
Students first acquire an overview of the most important political ideas since the Enlightenment until today. This knowledge forms the basis for the ability to contextualize political ideas and reflect on them against the respective historical and political background. Students are then given an overview of the components and characteristics of governmental systems as well as the connections between politics and society. The particular characteristics of the Austrian political system are examined in comparative perspective. In addition, the design and functioning of the core institutions of the European Union will be addressed.

(*)Im Bereich der Politischen Ideen werden die wesentlichen konkurrierenden Vorstellungen über die Ausgestaltung von Staat, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft behandelt. Im Bereich der Institutionen geht es um
die Unterscheidung von demokratischen und nicht-demokratischen Regierungssystemen sowie deren einzelnen
Bestandteile. Darüber hinaus werden auch gesellschaftliche Aspekte wie z.B. soziale, kulturelle und demografische
Entwicklungen und deren Bedeutung für Politik analysiert. Auf der europäischen Ebene werden die Entstehung und Entwicklung der Europäischen Union sowie deren politischen Prozesse und Institutionen vermittelt.
