Objectives |
Students gain the insight into the cultural change of Gender codes and the changing cultural coding of Gender. They acquire important knowledge of how cultural transformation goes along with a change in a culture’s ideas of femininity, masculinity and intersexuality as well as norms of gender via manifold cultural products and production.

Subject |
The seminar gives the opportunity for an overview in cultural studies of Gender and an in depth understanding of the central debates and results of Gender Studies. Thereby students are introduced to a historical dimension of cultural de- and re-coding of gender orders and gender meanings as well as to a cross-cultural dimension of change.

Criteria for evaluation |
Attendance and participation in discussion; reading of the assigned literature; small case studies and presentations.

Methods |
Research results are presented that unpack mechanisms and background assumptions of gender relations in diverse social and cultural fields and products. Students are encouraged to pursue self-learning in this field. Several approaches to unravel gender and diversity in social and cultural fields in innovative ways will be discussed.
