Detailed information
Original study plan Master's programme Joint Degree Master Molecular Biology 2024W
Objectives The aim of this course is to introduce students to different technologies in genetics and biotechnology with a special emphasis on sequencing technologies, single molecule methods, and genome editing. Specifically, the course is designed to review the current, state-of the-art technologies by reading/discussing the recent technologies published in scientific research articles. The specific goals are:

  1. To provide an introduction to ultra-sensitive technologies in genetics
  2. Gain insight how these technologies can be used to explain relevant processes in genetics and evolution
  3. Learn to read primary scientific literature
  4. Practice discussing scientific research papers
Subject
  1. Next generation sequencing (Illumina sequencing, Ion Torrent, Nanopore, PacBio)
  2. CRISPR/Cas genome editing
  3. Ultra-sensitive next generation sequencing (smMIP, rolling circle amplification strategy, duplex sequencing)
  4. Single cell sequencing
  5. Sequencing cancer (Mutational processes in human cancer; Tracing human cancer evolution with hypermutable DNA;)
  6. Single molecule PCR methods (digital-droplet PCR; bead emulsion amplification, BEAMing)
  7. Reproductive health (prenatal diagnosis)/CHIP-Seq/Retrotransposon sequencing/targeted enrichment
Criteria for evaluation The grade will be based on the oral presentation, participation during presentations, discussions and question during the student presentations and attendance, one page summary of the presented research paper, and a final exam.
Methods Several introductory lectures will be followed by student presentations. Students prepare a ~20 minute oral presentation of a research paper followed by a general discussion. The topics and contents of the presentations are discussed with support of guidelines that orient students which concepts and contents they should focus on and learn. There are four presentations per session on similar topics.
Language English and French
Study material Scientific research literature updated every year. The the presentations and summaries, as well as, recordings of the introductory lectures are made accessible on moodle. Study guidelines help the students to prepare for the final exam.
