Ziele (*)This course builds on the basic knowledge of cellular and molecular biology and expand the knowledge in selected areas of cellular, molecular, and developmental biology (KMB/758). Detailed mechanisms of synthesis, control, regulation, and degradation of key cell molecules will be analysed, focusing on the dynamics of all the processes and their mutual interconnection.
Lehrinhalte (*)1 Introduction: Summary of basic molecular biology principles. 2 RNA world: Overview of coding and non-coding RNA, RNA secondary structures, ribozymes, siRNA, miRNA, lncRNA, mRNA cycle in the cell - capping, splicing, translation regulation and degradation; RNA interference. 3 Protein life cycle in the cell: Protein folding, chaperone, protein trafficking and targeting in the cell, protein turnover, degradation, proteasome, protein posttranslational modifications. 4 Membranes: Composition of membranes, membrane transport, lipid rafts, respiratory chain. 5 Regulation of gene expression: Transcription, transcription factors, repressor, activator, operons, histone modifications, DNA modifications, epigenetic regulation, DNA methyltransferase, CpG islands. 6 Developmental 1: Ontogenesis, development, primary cells, polarization. 7 Developmental 2: From cell to tissue, cell differentiation, types of differentiation, cytoskeleton. 8 Hormones: Endocrine glands and endocrine signalling, protein hormones, steroid hormones, derivatives of the amino acid tyrosine, controls of hormone secretion, negative/positive feedback, cyclic changes, mechanism of action of hormones, functional disorders of endocrine glands. 9 Cell signalling: Types of signalling and types of receptors for sensing, protein-coupled receptors, receptor tyrosine kinases, integrin signalling, signal transduction, cell signalling and apoptosis, signalling pathways and signal response. 10 Cancer: Cancer cell features, tumorogenesis, metastasis, oncogene, tumour suppressor genes, examples from human medicine, viruses and cancer, hereditary cancer diseases, Cancer treatment. 11 Developmental Biochemistry - Examples of development and adaptation of biochemical metabolic pathways across groups of organisms. 12 Advanced molecular biology methods: RNAi, CRISPR/Cas9, gene therapy.

Criteria for evaluation Oral exam. During oral examination, the student must demonstrate at least basic knowledge and understanding to the topics covered by the lectures by answering the minimum of 51% of the questions
