Detailed information
Original study plan Master's programme Biological Chemistry 2024W
Objectives Students will attain an understanding of both theoretical principles and particular mechanisms of generation, storage and utilization of energy living organisms.
Subject 1) Overview of basics of energy metabolism. Introduction to the principles of energy acquisition and accumulation in living organisms. Basic pathways of energy metabolism. 2) Theoretical foundations of bioenergetics. Thermodynamics in bioenergetics. Diversity and description of organisms according to the energy source. 3) ATP and its functions in organism. Formation of ATP by oxidative phosphorylation and at the substrate level. ATP synthase, structure and function. 4) Photosynthesis and the principles of transformation of energy of radiation into chemical energy. Bacteria, cyanobacteria, algae and plants and their photosynthesis. 5) Diversity in metabolic bioenergetic strategies. Alternative bioenergetic pathways. 6) Energy metabolism disfunctions and their consequences on development and function of the organism.
Further information Criteria for valuation oral exam. Participation at lectures recommended. Continuous self-study of the subject. During the examination, student has to demonstrate orientation in the principles of energy conversion in living organisms

Methods Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming) , Work with text (with textbook, with book) , Individual preparation for exam
