Master's programme Polymer Technologies and Science (PTS) 2023W
Objectives
This course introduces the basic concepts of damage and failure of damage tolerant lightweight structures under service (operational) loads.
Subject
Material behavior under (1) quasi-static monotonic and (2) quasi-static cyclic (fatigue) loading; for cyclic loading, analysis methods for (a) fatigue damage initiation and (b) fatigue damage growth; particular damage modes and mechanisms for (A) homogeneous isotropic (e.g. metals) and (B) heterogeneous orthotropic (e.g. fiber reinforced laminated composites) materials; for the case of composite materials (i) intra-laminar and (ii) inter-laminar (delamination) damage; (j) analytical methods and (jj) particular aspects of the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) numerical implementation.
Criteria for evaluation
Written exam
Methods
As lecture notes the PowerPoint-slides are provided for download. Additional explanations and calculation examples are carried out at the black board.
