Objectives Line Managers are increasingly required to take responsibility for actively managing the risks in their organization. Managing risks related to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) should be high on every manager’s agenda. This course should help you to become familiar with basic leadership principles for effective HSE risk management.
Subject Sharing HSE knowledge with colleagues is a great service. It gives you an opportunity to think about others and not just yourself. If you want to be seen as a leader in your field, you must stand up and be vocal about what you have to offer. When your expertise helps your team or others, you become a more valuable part of it.

The aim is to get “Best Practice” in world class HSE as a part of Responsible Care into the material of this course, to give a flavor of the values of Health, Safety, Environmental leadership and management.

Criteria for evaluation Test with specific questions to check the overall understanding how to drive sustainable HSE, the needed culture change and the value out of it - One Criteria per Chapter 1-8 will be defined. A total of 100 (=100%) points can be reached. In each of the assessment categories, 50% of the points have to be reached in order to pass the course. For a positive grade, at least 60% of the total points is required. The final grade will be calculated according to the following formula: 0-59 (5); 60-69 (4); 70-79 (3); 80-89 (2); 90-100 (1).
Methods The entire course is divided into chapter 1-8 and an additional chapter 9. “Conclusions and Reflections / Evaluation” Power Point presentations with specific Videos, Pictures will be used to demonstrate , analyze and discuss the topics as well as to run workshops in groups. I will take my PC (Apple-Mac) and memory stick - Presentation, with the possibility to show the videos incorporated in the PowerPoint presentation

Study material Work book - PDF format (download will be provided via „WeTransfer“- mail to JKU) It includes examples and links to further extended material. The material shown in the sessions are based on different kind of literature studies (external / internal), cooperation with different institutes, international companies, HSE projects carried out over the last 5 years, European and local OSHA organization and last but not least my own 35 year of experience as leader of bigger organizations.

Further information Leaders and Managers must ensure that Health and Safety is resourced adequately, risk assessments are performed, records and reports checked and all managers are responsible individuals, willing to promote and enforce Health and Safety practices. Future line managers provide a link between your workforce and Health and Safety practice in the workplace, it is essential that regular in-depth training is provided. Managers must have a clear understanding of, and actively promote, policies and procedures and be aware of their company’s legal duties. Line managers must be competent in performing risk assessments, implement effective control measures and capable of thorough incident investigation. Line Managers are increasingly required to take responsibility for actively managing the risks in their organisation. This course should help you to become familiar with basic leadership principles for effective HSE risk management. This course is not a training program with all the details which you need in the future, but it should prepare you and give you an overview to understand why you need to start with HSE first - NOW.
