Ziele (*)Overall, this course aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and mindset needed to become proactive in the fight against plastics pollution and to foster engineers committed to creating a more sustainable future. Key Learning Objectives are: 1. Understanding the challenges and opportunities associated with the circular economy of plastics with focus on recycling. 2. Exploring the principles of Design for Recycling (DfR) and its significance in the circular economy. 3. Analyzing the lifecycle of plastics and identifying opportunities for intervention. 4. Evaluating the limitations of different recycling technologies. 5. Implementing sustainable design principles to minimize environmental impact and enhance recyclability. 6. Examining case studies of successful DfR initiatives and their impact on waste reduction and resource conservation. 7. Collaborating on practical projects to develop innovative DfR solutions.

Lehrinhalte (*)The circular economy is a critical aspect of addressing the global plastics pollution crisis. In a circular economy, the goal is a material circulation, with recycling as the last option. It is essential that we rethink the design, use, and reuse of plastics. This course delves into the multifaceted field of designing plastics with a focus on recyclability, exploring innovative best-case examples, material substitution approaches, technologies, and sustainable practices to mitigate environmental impact.
Beurteilungskriterien (*)Assessment in this course will be diverse, incorporating a range of methods to evaluate students' understanding and application of DfR concepts. This may include individual and group projects, presentations, written assignments, quizzes, and class participation.
Lehrmethoden (*)Through a mix of theoretical lectures, practical case studies, and hands-on exercises, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the principles and methods behind effective design for recycling strategies. The course covers a variety of topics including proper material selection, product design optimization, compatibility with recycling processes, and life cycle assessment.
