(*)The core compulsory subject "Polymer Product Engineering" provides competences in the fields of component design and performance including the necessary theoretical, experimental and numerical methods and tools. It covers the numerical modelling of macroscopic components including aspects of microscopic structure formation during the polymer processing step and related issues of micromechanics accounting for the heterogeneous material morphology in components and in parts. Special attention is devoted to light weight design principles particularly also for advanced polymer matrix composite materials and their applications in engineering structures and mechatronics devices exposed to complex loading situations.

(*)The core compulsory subject "Polymer Product Engineering" contains two sub-groups of courses. The first sub-group covers aspects of mechanical material models and constitutive equations for engineering polymers and composites, and the integration of processing, micromechanics and structural simulations for design and optimization. It contains the following courses:
- Mechanical Material Models for Polymers (lecture) - Polymer Product Design and Engineering 4: Integrated Injection Moulding, Micromechanics and Structure Simulation (lecture and laboratory course)
The second sub-group covers topics related to both general principles, basics and advanced mechanics, and methods for light weight design, the latter specifically for advanced polymer matrix composite materials. It includes the following courses:
- Design of Lightweight Structures (lecture) - Lightweight Design with Composite Materials (lecture and laboratory course)
The Exercise "Structural Durability Calculations" utilizes the knowledges generated in both sub-groups of courses. Special attention is given in this exercesie to the theory of the engineering assessement of the long-term behavior of polymer matrix composite materials, especially the basics of structural durability calculations and life-time assessment procedures using probability based approaches. These theoretical considerations are expalined based on practical case studies.
