Detailinformationen
Anmeldevoraussetzungen (*)220KTKWPW1V23 Polymeric Materials 1 or equivalent
Quellcurriculum Masterstudium Polymer Engineering and Science 2024W
Ziele (*)Overall scope and aims include: (1) addressing and highlighting the importance of the subject matter in terms of the role of defects and cracks in governing failure of engineering materials and structures, which initiated the scientific and engineering development of fracture mechanics as an academic discipline, (2) to develop a good understanding for the need of various fracture mechanics concepts for plastics due their inherent viscoelastic/-plastic nature with mechanical properties depending on loading rate, time and temperature, and (3) to ascertain a sound knowledge base and foster a good understanding of the applicability and limitations of various fracture mechanics concepts to plastics, depending on their failure behavior (brittle vs. ductile to various degrees), and on the type of loading (dynamic/monotonic, static, cyclic) as well as other loading conditions (i.e., specific loading parameters and environmental conditions).
Lehrinhalte (*)- The importance of fracture mechanics based on the history of failures of materials in structural applications in general, along with the principal attributes and common features of these failures - Basic concepts of fracture mechanics and the “Fracture Mechanics Tool-Box” - Fracture and Fatigue of Polymeric Materials in terms of fracture mechanics - Applicability and application of fracture mechanics concepts to polymers (macroscopic view) under dynamic (high-rate/impact), monotonic (moderate rate), static (creep) and cyclic (fatigue) loading - Plastic deformation at crack tips in plastics (a microscopic view) - Molecular aspects of crack growth in polymers (a molecular view)
Beurteilungskriterien (*)Written exam (option for an additional oral exam to improve grade of a positive written exam).
Lehrmethoden (*)Lectures by course leader/instructor; interactive discussions and reflections.
Abhaltungssprache Englisch
Literatur (*)Primarily lecture handouts (pdf of ppt-slides); recommended literature (books) for support.
