Subject |
Students in this course will get a basic understanding in the application of the principles of physical chemistry leading to an understanding of the processes responsible for industrial processes and life. Parallel to the lecture Physical Chemistry I it provides examples and related exercises that are calculated and discussed in this class. Topics that are covered are:
1) Gas laws
- Empirical gas laws
- Description of real gases
- Kinetic gas theory
- Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution
2) Introduction to quantum chemistry
- History of atomistic development
- Bohr atomic model
- Schrödinger equation
- Particle-in-a-box
3) Thermodynamics
- Classical thermodynamics
- Cycle processes
- Statistical thermodynamics
- Partition function
- Chemical equilibrium
4) Introduction to chemical kinetics
5) Introduction to electrochemistry
- Electrochemical potential
- Electrolyte solutions and dissociation
- Types of electrochemical cells
- Standard redox potentials
