Pre-requisites |
PR Lab Course in Analytical Chemistry VL Instrumental Analytical Chemistry
|
Original study plan |
Bachelor's programme Chemistry and Chemical Technology 2023W |
Objectives |
Practical experience in using modern instruments for analytical chemistry
|
Subject |
Students will get practical experience with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation with a focus on chromatographic and electrophoretic techniques. Students have to work independently and carry out the following analyses:
- Determination of residues of pesticides in honey by gas chromatography / mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This analysis deals with organic trace analysis and includes sample preparation and analyte enrichment by liquid-liquid extraction. Gas chromatographic separation is hyphenated with mass spectrometric detection in the selected ion monitoring mode.
- Ion chromatographic determination of anions in drinking water. This analysis demonstrates the routine quantitation of inorganic anions like chloride, nitrate and sulfate by anion-exchange chromatography and suppressed conductivity detection.
- Quantitation of ingredients of commercially available pharmaceutical formulations by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and UV detection. This analysis demonstrates quality control of pharmaceutical products.
- Determination of artificial sweeteners by capillary electrophoresis (CE). This analysis shows existing alternatives to widely used chromatographic techniques.
