(*)Introduction to biology and definition of life. Evolutionary theory and the questions it has raised about heredity and diversity of organisms. The origin of life, the cell as the basic unit of life, the domains of life.
Metabolism - cellular energetics and the energy cycle - respiration and photosynthesis. Cellular compartments in terms of metabolism.
Mendelian genetics, chromosomal theory of heredity, DNA as a carrier of hereditary information, deciphering the genetic code. Central dogma.
Molecular structure of genes and chromosomes: molecular definition of gene, chromosomal arrangement of genes and non-coding DNA, structural arrangement of chromosomes.
Basic molecular genetic mechanisms, DNA replication: Understanding the central dogma of molecular biology and review of basic molecular genetic mechanisms. Basic features of DNA replication in vivo.
