Introduction to the solution of boundary value problems for elliptic partial differential equations by the finite element and similar methods.

Examples of linear elliptic boundary value problems, properties of Sobolev spaces, weak formulation, existence of weak solutions, elliptic variational problems, Galerkin approximation, finite element method, apriori error estimates, duality arguments, implementational aspects, linear solvers, aposteriori error estimation, adaptive mesh refinement, nonconforming Galerkin approximation, finite volume methods, discontinuous Galerkin methods, nonlinear elliptic problems.
