Objectives This lecture provides an introduction to relevant number theoretic results and methods as well as an overview of applications of number theory.
Subject Today number theory can be found in everyday life: in supermarket bar code scanners, in our cars' GPS systems, in online banking, etc.

After a brief introduction to number theory we discuss selected results from the four main application areas of number theory: cryptography, coding theory, quasi-Monte Carlo methods, and pseudorandom number generation.

Criteria for evaluation Depending on the number of participants either oral or written tests.

Study material Lecture notes are provided.

For further reading we recommend in particular the textbooks:

H. Niederreiter and A. Winterhof: 'Applied Number Theory'

G. Leobacher and F. Pillichshammer: 'Introduction to quasi-Monte Carlo integration and applications'

W. Willems: 'Codierungstheorie und Kryptographie'.
