Detailed information
Original study plan Master's programme Mechanical Engineering 2023W
Objectives After successfully engaging with the topics of this course, students will be able to

  • describe the physical meaning of the individual terms of the Navier-Stokes equations,
  • comprehend the solution approach of classical examples of exact solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations and provide a physical interpretation of the results,
  • comprhend the derivation of boundary layer equations and describe basic solutions of laminar boundary layer problems,
  • explain the fundamentals of turbulent boundary layers,
  • solve basic steady and transient heat conduction problems,
  • estimate heat transfer due to forced and natural convection,
  • conduct analytical calculations of flow- and heat transfer problems.

The level of mathematical modeling and analysis of the mentioned topics is comparable to the level of the textbooks: White, Viscous Fluid FLow, 1991 und Baehr, Stephan, Wärme- und Stoffübertragung, 2013.

Subject
  • basic equations (Navier-Stokes equations)
  • exact solutions of Navier-Stokes equations
  • boundary-layer theory
  • heat conduction
  • convective heat transfer
Criteria for evaluation Written assignment, written and/or oral exam
Methods Lecture by means of a script, development of practical examples
