Detailed information
Original study plan Bachelor's programme Sustainable Polymer Engineering & Circular Economy 2023W
Objectives Students are able to:

  1. define circularity criteria for plastic products.
  2. classify the circularity of plastic products by main fields of application (i.e., packaging, building & construction, automotive, electrical & electronics, sports, agriculture, etc.).
  3. explain current trends (recyclability and circularity, monolayer versus multilayer, material combinations) and innovations in the various product segments with specific focus on packaging.
  4. differentiate between different requirements on food packaging and describe appropriate solutions with a focus on the legal framework for food contact materials.
  5. identify different pathways of waste collection and processing according to the main fields of application.
Subject Fundamentals of circular economy, 10 Rs of circularity, assessment of circularity of plastic products by classification into main fields of application, fundamentals of packaging technology, terminology, tasks of packaging, protective function, requirements for food packaging, interaction of product/packaging, mass transfer between packaging and product: migration, permeation, law food contact material: (VO 1935/2004, 2023/2006, 10/2011 etc.), quality assurance, packaging materials (plastics, biomaterials, paper/cardboard, metals), innovations (modified atmosphere packaging, AIP), environmental aspects, convenience packaging, fundamentals of plastics in building & construction, automotive, electrical & electronics, sports, agriculture, pathways of waste collection.
Criteria for evaluation Oral/written exam at the middle/end of the lecture series.
