Ziele (*)The subject aims to be an introduction into molecular biology of the cell. Basic molecular biology mechanisms in cells will be reviewed and overview of applications of molecular biology techniques in today's science will be given.

Sonstige Informationen (*)Introduction to biology and definition of life. Evolutionary theory and the questions it has raised about heredity and diversity of organisms. The origin of life, the cell as the basic unit of life, the domains of life. Metabolism - cellular energetics and the energy cycle - respiration and photosynthesis. Cellular compartments in terms of metabolism. Mendelian genetics, chromosomal theory of heredity, DNA as a carrier of hereditary information, deciphering the genetic code. Central dogma. Molecular structure of genes and chromosomes: molecular definition of gene, chromosomal arrangement of genes and non-coding DNA, structural arrangement of chromosomes. Basic molecular genetic mechanisms, DNA replication: Understanding the central dogma of molecular biology and review of basic molecular genetic mechanisms. Basic features of DNA replication in vivo. Transcription and RNA processing, translation and genetic code: principles of transcription in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, basic regulation of gene expression at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Principles of translation, genetic code. Mutations, DNA repair and recombination: molecular basis of mutations, induced mutagenesis, overview of repair mechanisms and principles of recombination. Genetic diversity - germ vs. somatic lineage, mitosis/meiosis. Regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes, eukaryotes and genetic control of development: operon, molecular control of transcription in eukaryotes, gene expression and chromosome organization, mechanisms of regulation of gene expression during development. Cellular differentiation and epigenetics. Cell behaviour during development. Evo-Devo. Molecular analysis of genes and gene products: use of recombinant DNA technology to identify genes, molecular diagnosis of human diseases. Recombinant DNA technology, polymerase chain reaction: Cloning of genes, principle of polymerase chain reaction and its applications. Overview of applications of molecular biology in modern basic and applied science: Summary of the subject in the context of the use of molecular biology in modern research.
