Detailed information
Original study plan Bachelor's programme Biological Chemistry 2022W
Objectives The aim of this course is to level the basic mathematical knowledge of all beginning students coming from different educational backgrounds. It should prepare them for the follow up courses in mathematics which take place after this introductory lecture.
Subject The following elementary mathematical topics are brought up: Types of numbers, order of algebraic operations, rules of computing with fractions, definitions and calculation rules for sets and intervals; dealing with percentages, ratios, concentrations and proportions; definitions and rules for powers; scientific notation and orders of magnitude; solving linear equations; solving quadratic equations, binomial formulas and factorising formulas; logarithms, solving equations involving roots or absolute values, solving transcendental and rational equations; division of polynomials; solving inequalities; basic trigonometry and solving trigonometric equalities. The students will be presented with the material, i.e. the formulae and mathematical rules, as well as calculated examples. During the lecture they will get exercises to work through and present their results.
Criteria for evaluation compulsory attendance, written examination
Changing subject? No
