| Objectives |
The lecture (which includes small exercises) aims at presenting an overview about the subject area “Work and society” . This will support the students in their decision, whether to chose a specialisation in addition to the general Master Course in sociology. Accordingly, the lecture presents basic knowledge about the subject.

| Subject |
The lecture introduces students to the history of ideas about Work and connects this with an indepth theoretical examination of the concept of Work. Further it will offer insights into the state of the art of research into different forms of work such as wage labour, other forms of employment, domestic work, subsistence, voluntary work. It will also debate technological changes of work, its political regulation, etc. Concrete teaching contents will vary according to the responsible lecturer.

| Criteria for evaluation |
Depending on the didactic concept one or more criteria will be applied: attendance, active participation, exams, literature essays, presentations and talks.

| Methods |
Concrete methods will differ according to the responsible lecturers, who will vary. Interactive formats – varying roleplays, interviews, fish-bowl debates, poster-sessions etc. – will be linked to intensive readings and debates about different texts. Single and group work about topics the students can chose etc. will help to deepen knowledge.
