| Objectives |
After completing the course, students will be familiar with the development, the content and the impact of supranational, especially European, social policy, including future challenges.

| Subject |
Students develop an in-depth understanding of the overall architecture of supranational social policy making with a focus on the European Union as well as of the ongoing debates in this field of research. At the beginning, students become familiar with the role of the European institutions and of interest groups (representing labour and employers) in making European social policy. Details of the current European social policy, with a particular emphasis on social legislation and the open method of coordination, will be discussed. A further part of the course advances the understanding of the impact of European social policy in selected policy fields (e.g. working conditions, equality). Moreover, students will engage with the long-term evolution of European social policy since the late 1950s. In addition to the EU, the course also engages with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the diffusion of the ILO labour standards at the global level.

Active participation during the Intensive Programme, written assignments.
