(*)This is a graduate course in Microeconomics. Students learn basic concepts and methods and discuss their empirical validity. Moreover, market outcomes and failures are analyzed, as well as potential responses by policy makers.

(*)The course starts with a theoretical description of preferences as the basis of individual decision making under certainty and uncertainty.
Then, the role of markets is discussed, in particular how markets generate welfare, but also how information frictions lead to market failures.
Finally, the empirical validity of the theoretical concepts is explored and which institutions and regulations can help to support more efficient outcomes
