Objectives Building on Spanish Communicative Skills and Business Spanish 1, students extend knowledge of language learning strategies and communication strategies appropriate to B2+ level. They are able to produce and understand Spanish at a B2+ level according to the CEFR. They can understand complex Spanish text on concrete and abstract topics relating to business and economics. They can produce reports in Spanish which develop an argument systematically with appropriate highlighting of significant points and supporting detail. They can explain different viewpoints related to typical decisions faced in a range of business contexts and formulate a solution based on consideration of advantages and disadvantages. They can interact with fluency and spontaneity in communicative contexts such as meetings, negotiations, etc. They can express their ideas and opinions precisely, presenting and responding to complex lines of argument. They can relay in Spanish ideas, arguments and opinions expressed in their native language. Students are aware of register variation in Spanish and differences between formal and informal communicative contexts. The students deepen their awareness of challenges in intercultural communication in multicultural teams and organisations.
Subject The following topics will form the basis of classroom activities:

  • Aspects of grammar and vocabulary development necessary for linguistic and communicative competences at B2+ level
  • Various themes in contemporary business and society in Spanish-speaking countries
  • Communicative activities to foster development of student abilities in the four skill areas (speaking, listening, reading and writing)
  • Discussion of key genre properties of written reports and business presentations
Criteria for evaluation Continuous assessment in the form of production and comprehension tasks during the semester; Oral presentation tasks; Final written exam
Methods Communicative language practice and self-study methods to develop linguistic and communicative competences at the B2 level on the CEFR. Explanation of genre conventions and register variation. Grammar and vocabulary development activities. Role-plays, negotiations, presentations and interaction.
