Detailed information
Original study plan Bachelor's programme Technical Physics 2022W
Objectives Introduction to biophysical concepts important for understanding biological processes on a subcellular and cellular level.
Subject Based on statistical thermodynamics, the self-assembly of membranes is shown, as well as the relevance of non- covalent interaction and the lipid structure. Calorimetrical and microscopical methods for the investigation of membrane phase changes are presented. The examination of lipid mobility leads to Fick's laws, osmosis and the analysis of diffusion in an electrical field. Electrokinetic aspects, electrochemical double-layers and the energy profile of charged molecules lead to transport processes through membranes and its attendant electrical potentials (action potential and resting potential). Electrical and chemical stimuli transfer requires an introduction to the molecular machinery of exocytosis and endocytosis.
