Detailed information
Pre-requisites VL Organic Chemistry 1 PR Lab Course in General Chemistry
Original study plan Bachelor's programme Chemistry and Chemical Technology 2021W
Objectives Performing fundamental syntheses and characterisations of organic compounds .
Subject The course is divided into six consecutive sections devoted to particular reaction types.
Section 1 deals with the preparative separation of organic compounds based on their acid/base properties and characterization by physical properties (Melting point, boiling point, refractive index and simple IR, MS and NMR spectra)
Section 2 deals with nucleophilic aliphatic substitution reactions and safety issues.
In section 3 the students will learn about properties and reactions of carbonyl compounds.
Section 4 is devoted to electrophilic addition, elimination, reduction and oxidation reactions.
In Section 5 reactions of aromatic compounds are in the focus of interest. Rearrangement and pericyclic reactions are the topic of the last section.
In each section several practical assignments have to be performed in the lab under the supervision of experienced tutors and assistants. The students are required to adequately document their laboratory work in protocol books and take intermediate exams on safe laboratory procedures.
Criteria for evaluation Tests on safety issues and preparedness for the practical work

Practical performance including safe practice

Documentation of the results obtained (protocols)

Final comprehensive discussion of individual results

Methods Guided practical laboratory work
Language English
