Objectives
Knowledge of power semiconductor devices and power electronic circuits
Subject
A comprehensive laboratory takes place parallel to the lecture to deepen the knowledge gained from the course and furthermore to give an introduction to the theory and practice of
power electronic circuits and their components.
The laboratory exercise comprises four lessons, each lasting four hours, dealing with different topics:
Power Semiconductor Devices and Circuits - Introduction:
During this lab class participants investigate the switching behaviour of different single-phase half
bridges in order to obtain a further understanding of the single-phase-full-bridge and 3-phase-inverter
circuits.
Buck and boost converters:
The main focus in this lesson is to verify the figures und formulas already known from the lecture in
the field of buck and boost converters. Furthermore, the effects regarding to the non-ideal
components (e.g. oscillations) are explored and discussed.
Cuk- converter:
In this section we will have a look at the design of electrical circuits by means of a Cuk - converter. Among a simulation in Spice a layout has to be prepared with EAGLE in
order to build up your own Cuk - converter. To complete this laboratory section, measurements will
have to be done and to be compared with the simulations.
Controlled rectifier: Three phase thyristor bridge:
The subject of this lesson is a B6 thyristor brigde to rectify the line voltage. The behaviour and
characteristics of this converter bridge is measured under different load conditions (ohmic resistance,
inductive load, DC machine as motor/generator).
